KSUK cleans IG Stadium stands after Dr T Ao Trophy quarter-final

A social media video showing rubbish scattered across IG Stadium’s gallery prompted immediate action. The Konyak Students’ Union Kohima launched a cleanup drive following the viral footage during the ongoing Dr. T Ao Trophy football tournament.

The Konyak Students’ Union Kohima (KSUK) organised the cleanliness drive on Monday after the quarter-final match between Mon and Dimapur districts. KSUK leaders explained that they focused on cleaning the gallery area where spectators had left behind significant amounts of rubbish. The massive crowd made the cleanup challenging, but volunteers worked to clear as much waste as possible from the affected areas.

The initiative emerged after organisers shared a video highlighting the littering problem at the stadium. KSUK members said they had repeatedly witnessed large crowds leaving rubbish behind after matches. This pattern of behaviour, combined with the viral video, motivated the student union to take direct action rather than wait for others to address the growing waste problem.

The cleanup operation involved cooperation between KSUK and Kohima Konyak Church Youth members. Leaders from the student union emphasised that civilised society requires clean public spaces, noting that nobody wants to spend time in dirty environments. They described their intervention as a necessary step to maintain the stadium’s welcoming atmosphere for all visitors.

As supporters of the Mon district team, KSUK committed to continuing their cleanup efforts during the district’s remaining matches in the tournament. The organisation issued a direct appeal to spectators, urging them to take personal responsibility for their waste disposal.

Kohima Deputy Commissioner Henok Buchem, who serves as member secretary of the organising committee for the 24th Dr. T Ao Inter-District Football Tournament, acknowledged the student union’s efforts. He confirmed that a dedicated ground management committee handles cleanliness, maintenance, and sanitation responsibilities at the stadium.

While expressing appreciation for KSUK’s voluntary cleanup work, Buchem made a public appeal to tournament attendees. He encouraged fans to enjoy the football matches while simultaneously maintaining clean surroundings and galleries.
